Educate Children & Empower Youths in a Lagos Slum
As a community based organization, we provide an opportunity for children and youths in an underserved slum community to have a shot at life. We support children to go to school, stay in school and gain quality education. We empower youths with employability or vocational & entrepreneurial skills, to become economically engaged and make a living for themselves. We do this because every child deserves quality education, safety and a chance to thrive, irrespective of their backgrounds.
The number of out-of-school children and idle youths in our community is alarming. Many parents and youths lack the basic skills they to be gainfully employed. Hence, parents lack the economic stability to provide basic education for their children, instead children hawk petty commodities on the streets to support their families while many youths have settled for alternative, inappropriate ways to sustain themselves, making the community unsafe for children to thrive because of crimes.
We support children in our slum community to go to school and gain quality education by providing them the resources they including school supplies, backpacks, books and shoes. We provide professional development training and teaching aids for local teachers in the community and we want to run a mobile community library. In addition, we also provide unemployed youths and parents with vocational & entrepreneurship skills training and business start-up kits to help them be gainfully engaged.
Our impact creates academic equity for children of low socioeconomic status and helps reduce the rate of out-of-school children. With our mobile library being the only access they will have to books, children can develop their minds and the culture of reading, enabling them to see the world beyond their current conditions. Also, more youths will be economically empowered to be self-sustained, consequently reducing crime in the community and contributing to ending the cycle of poverty.
